Top shows of 2024 posted on SA

Looking back, I didn't watch that many series this year, much less series that I liked (I tend not to finish stuff I don't like though). I will only rank the series I want to give points to, and list the rest later.

9. The Three Body Problem
Reading the book probably made it better because I could ignore the plot holes the series created. Had a few "wow" moments, and improved on the book in some ways.

8. English Teacher
While never quite laugh-out-loud, and with very sitcom-y acting, a very solid sitcom with very modern vibes. I thought it was at its best when it stuck to the school setting, though I can see it expanding more in future seasons (well, ignoring the whole toxic creator thing).

7. The Bear
Not as good as the first two seasons, and the drama is irritating at times, but I enjoyed the episodes which reminded me of slice-of-life anime and the like-- just people learning about a craft and about themselves (though I had to watch all of those with the feeling that something horrible will happen soon).

6. Curb Your Enthusaism
One of my favourite comedies ever finishing with an alright season that is always ALMOST great. I loved the last couple of seasons so it's not like Larry has lost it, but I think that wanting to relate to current affairs and to have a bit of a "victory lap" (especially in the finale) hurt it. That said, it did have a lot of small jokes that I liked and I will definitely be rewatching. Fish stuck.

5. X-Men '97
I didn't watch much of the original but I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it was just hokey enough in a way that helped you suspend disbelief when stupid comicbook shit happened.

4. Very Important People
Incredibly uneven based on the guests (unsurprisingly) - but when it works it absolutely works. Pig 2, Princess Emily, and most importantly Tommy Shriggly raise this above being just some youtube show I'll watch on the metro.

3. Game Changer
Its sixth season continues the tradition of having episodes designed to fuck with Brennan and disappointing finales, Game Changer is still one of the most unique and uniquely funny content you can consume anywhere. Hope they can keep it up.

2. Mr and Mrs Smith
I never watched the film, but the show was great. Glover's style of having a lot of real human drama along with humour and more surrealistic moments/plots really shines here, maybe moreso than in Atlanta. Definitely the most slept-on show this year.

1. Shogun
I don't know if there's much left to be said. From dollar store Tom Hardy saying "The Japans" to Yabushige grunt-acting to people carefully walking and/or sitting, a great show from start to finish and it made me finally read the book.

Shows I've watched and liked:

Solar Opposites - Whatever, it's on in the background. It's nice, funny sometimes and original sometimes. I completely skip The Wall episodes and the Silver Cops ones, who the fuck is asking for this?

Avatar The Last Airbender - I can't believe they made a decent adaptation of this, but after One Piece I can't be surprised. Still, it was inferior in pretty much every way to the cartoon. I enjoyed watching it but I don't know if I would've liked it if I hadn't watched the cartoon.

Bob's Burger season whatever - yeah it's bob's burgers.

Other Dropout stuff - Make Some Noise, Dirty Laundry and Gastronauts were pretty good but never laugh-out-loud funny like the other ones.

Invincible - I like the comic and I remember liking this season but I can't remember ANYTHING from it. I blame the ridiculous schedule.

Shows I watched and didn't like:
The Boys - fuck this show is stupid but I can't stop watching.

For All Mankind - fuck this show is stupid but I can't stop watching (in space).

Masters Of The Air - The only good things about this show is like the four scenes when they're actually in the air, and the fact that it made me rewatch Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

Thing I didn't finish because I didn't like enough or couldn't get into:
Baby Reindeer, Fallout, Arcane (still stuck in season 1). A special mention goes to Hacks which true to its name is super hacky and didn't have a plot point nor joke I couldn't see coming from a mile away.

I completely forgot that Pachinko S2 and Cobra Kai S5 came out this year. I guess if I forgot them they don't deserve a place in my top 10? Or is that victim blaming?
